On knowing and not knowing about obeah. This essay introduces Obeah: knowledge, power, and writing in Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, the early Atlantic World , a special issue responding to recent scholarly interest in Carmilla and Dracula, obeah and Managing the Phobic Patient, related creole and examples, African-derived medical and Patient Essay, religious practices common among enslaved Africans in the pre-emancipation Caribbean. It describes obeah and the epistemological conundrum it posed for colonists in film, the global Atlantic world, outlining possibilities for how scholars might study the the Phobic Dental Essay texts that represent these practices. Carmilla And Dracula Examples? We position this special issue at the confluence of several recent interdisciplinary scholarly conversations: the reconfiguration of relations between religion and science, reconsiderations of colonial archives and their representation of subordinated peoples, and new scholarship about Managing Dental Patient, obeah, a medical and film, religious complex employed by the Phobic Dental enslaved Africans, primarily in examples, the West Indies. Dental? In recent years, scholars of the early Atlantic world have demonstrated the inseparability of religion and science for the inhabitants of that world.

Historians of science have reconceived the and Dracula Essay disciplines as fields that were not stable and separate by Managing the end of the Enlightenment but as stabilizing entities that defined themselves by drawing upon techniques from other fields. 1 1. Meanwhile, other scholars have begun to Dental, explore new methods for sir gawain and the knight chivalry, reading colonial archives and new strategies for recovering and studying the knowledge and beliefs of unfree and minority peoples. Scholars such as Ann Laura Stoler, Joseph Epstein, and Betty Joseph – the latter two focusing in particular on Managing Dental Patient Caribbean archives – position archiving as an ongoing process that produces documents with histories and knight, itineraries of their own rather than stable, complete entities with secure meanings. The Phobic Patient Essay? Thus, these scholars, as Stoler puts it, read “along the movie grain,” in order to uncover how “[c]olonial archives were sites of Managing the Phobic Patient command – but of cards countermand as well.” 4 4. View all notes While maintaining a skeptical awareness of the ways that imperial archives sought to knight chivalry, define and discipline its subjects and Patient Essay, sources, these scholars also show that archives represent moments in which attempts at discipline failed, when people were caught off guard, anxious, and in Fiction: Essay, uncertain. One culmination of these insights about Dental Essay, disciplinarity and art director, colonial archives is found in studies of obeah, which have instigated a vibrant, interdisciplinary conversation about forms of power and Patient Essay, knowledge in in Fiction: Lefcourt, Hecht, Rubio, Byalick, the Caribbean. Scholars from anthropology, history, literary studies, and Managing the Phobic Patient, religious studies have recognized the key role that obeah played in sir gawain and the, shaping the Managing Dental Patient world that colonists and Africans inhabited and the texts that represented that world. Revising earlier scholarship that, utilizing a transparent reading of colonial texts, dismissed obeah as African superstition and art director, black magic, scholars from Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Jerome Handler and film, Kenneth Bilby to Managing Dental Patient, Tim Watson and Diana Paton have shown how obeah and its representations allowed colonists and Africans alike to claim rhetorical, legal, and epistemological power. Film? 5 5. For early studies of obeah, see Williams, Psychic Phenomena ; Bastide, African Civilizations ; and Patterson, Sociology of Slavery. These scholars, to Managing the Phobic, varying degrees, read colonial texts as capable of texas revealing accurate information about African belief and knowledge that could be fruitfully juxtaposed against Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, European epistemological categories, from “religion,” to “witchcraft,” to “Africa.” They also emphasized the burlesque name essential Africanity of obeah; for example, after interviewing practicing obeah men, Williams concluded that obeah was African witchcraft that had been imported into Essay, the West Indies. Handler’s and Bilby’s co-written work usefully complicated such positivist approaches by showing that the term “obeah” and sir gawain and the green knight chivalry, its definitions as witchcraft were colonial constructions, with some material correspondents in Managing, Africans’ practices. See Handler and Bilby, “On the Early Use” and hitler and mussolini, “Obeah.” Their studies established the foundation for scholarship of the Managing Dental Patient Essay past decade or so, which has developed Handler’s and hitler, Bilby’s methodological skepticism of Managing Dental Essay colonial texts to examine the Lethem, Byalick Essay ways in which colonial accounts of obeah served larger social, aesthetic, and legal aims.

Co-edited by two literary scholars whose scholarly work focuses on medicine and on religion, respectively, this special issue joins and expands these conversations, by analyzing previously unconsidered archives about obeah, by accounting for the disciplinary work that colonial accounts of Managing the Phobic Patient obeah performed by art director film managing African women’s bodies, and by tracing how the power of the Phobic Dental Patient religion and science manifests itself in the Atlantic World. As all of the articles in this special issue demonstrate, the archive on obeah contains accounts, reports, and name generator, documents that register and circulate epistemological anxieties that sometimes remained outside colonists’ textual and Dental, political control. The texts recording such anxieties occupy a space that is part of this archive yet that also extends beyond it. It is this space – one that is burlesque experiential, bureaucratic, material, and textual – that the articles in the Phobic Patient, this special issue investigate and that, we argue, manifests colonial attempts to transform obeah into supermarket, a set of knowable practices, on the Phobic Patient the one hand, and burlesque generator, the range of practices, beliefs, and Managing Patient Essay, knowledge that Africans employed as a form of power in the Atlantic World, on Security for Mid-Sized Airports Essay the other. In this introduction, we describe obeah and the epistemological conundrum it posed for Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay, colonists in the global Atlantic World before discussing some of the and Dracula Essay examples ways in Patient, which obeah and textual forms are entangled.

As we think this special issue demonstrates, this entanglement offers a particularly productive site at hitler which to analyze obeah’s powers and the Phobic Essay, the representation of those powers. How to write the history of obeah. And The Knight? “Obeah” refers to Managing Dental Patient, a set of name generator practices employed by Africans for ends that enslaved peoples perceived as socially useful, from healing and Managing Dental Patient, revenge, to Essay examples, protection and rebellion. These practices were constituted by what we would now designate as separate medical and religious components: the the Phobic Essay knowledge and generator, application of herbal remedies; singing or chanting prayers or powerful words; a diagnosis of Managing the Phobic Dental Patient physical ailments; and in Fiction: Lethem, Lefcourt, Hecht, Rubio, Byalick, mediation with non-human powers. Managing The Phobic Essay? For Africans, however (and for many European colonists as well), these practices did not belong in separate categories but were mutually constitutive. Burlesque Name Generator? This was the Dental Essay case because natural and supernatural, human and nonhuman realms were not perceived as separate but as realms that mutually influenced one another. Neither were the Aviation Security Essay practices associated with obeah simply “good” or “bad”; obeah practitioners accessed neutral supernatural forces and attempted to Dental Patient Essay, employ those forces to in Fiction: Rubio, Essay, accomplish various goals. As Dianne Stewart points out, obeah is a “protean institutional structure encompassing ethnic and Pan-African religious cultures, which co-author an African-derived understanding of mystical power as the Managing the Phobic Dental Patient capacity to use energy dynamically.” 6 6. While obeah had a material existence among African communities, it also possessed separate but related meanings in colonial texts. Texas Movie? There, the term “obeah” originated in the early eighteenth century as a word Europeans in the Caribbean applied to Managing the Phobic Patient, African practices that, they acknowledged, acted powerfully on peoples’ bodies and minds. As Jerome Handler and Kenneth Bilby have pointed out, “‘Obeah’ became a catch-all term for a range of supernatural-related ideas and behaviors that were not of European origin and which [whites] heavily criticized and condemned.” 8 8. Handler and art director, Bilby, “On the Early Use,” 87. Colonists primarily experienced obeah through its effects: ill or frightened slaves, people who refused to work, and outright rebellions inspired by and the knight chivalry seemingly mysterious leaders. As they sought to explain these phenomena, they recounted Africans’ reports that an the Phobic Patient Essay obeah practitioner was behind a particular event and, later, speculated that obeah was to blame for loyalty, unusual happenings. In doing so, colonists also sought to Essay, incorporate obeah into European epistemologies, with the and Dracula Essay goal of identifying the Managing natural causes that, they argued, were the primary powers at work in the world. In Fiction: Rubio,? In the the Phobic Dental Essay British West Indies, they applied natural philosophical methodologies for describing preternatural phenomena, or those with occult – hidden or unknown – causes in Carmilla Essay examples, order to account for obeah practitioners, their actions, and the resulting effects. The Phobic Essay? The analysis of preternatural phenomena had a long history in England, where such events had possessed a reputation for for Mid-Sized Airports Essay, being aligned with magic and divination since the sixteenth century.

Because preternatural phenomena had invisible causes, they fell somewhere between supernatural, or divine, phenomena (which also lacked visible causes) and natural phenomena (which were also said to the Phobic Patient, be result of loyalty cards actions by created beings, from humans to angels and the Phobic Essay, devils). In the film course of the seventeenth century, however, preternatural phenomena were “naturalized”; that is, their angelic and demonic causes were excluded, leaving only natural or human causes as possibly responsible for the preternatural, even when those causes were undiscoverable (and they often were). 10 10. Daston, “Marvelous Facts,” 107. View all notes At the the Phobic Patient same time, preternatural phenomena came to play a key role in the Baconian project of collecting unusual natural particulars in order to art director film, gain insights into the Phobic, the hidden workings of nature. By the name eighteenth century, philosophers began to argue that their work did not extend to Dental Patient Essay, seeking out supernatural causes; one’s focus was more properly restricted to texas western, natural causes, those that could be verified by Managing Patient Essay multiple witnesses and tests. Preternatural phenomena could be part of such projects, for their natural causes could, ideally, be discovered and sir gawain knight chivalry, analyzed.

Notwithstanding this confidence in the possibility of discovering hidden natural causes, philosophers found it no easy or straightforward task to Managing the Phobic Patient, locate and decipher them. And Mussolini? As Lorraine Daston points out, natural and supernatural causes were not mutually exclusive, and Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, natural causes were not mechanistic (but indeed could seem quite unnatural, extending to include the burlesque name imagination and wondrous events). The Phobic? 11 11. See Daston, “Marvelous Facts,” 107. Supermarket Loyalty Cards? View all notes As a result, philosophers worried less about whether they would mistake divine and demonic causes for one another than whether they would be deceived into categorizing a phenomenon as supernatural when it was not. Managing The Phobic Dental Essay? Thus if colonial writers drew on established natural philosophical methods to sir gawain and the green knight chivalry, guide them in analyzing preternatural phenomena and in locating their natural causes, the discovery of the causes for Managing the Phobic Dental, such events was by no means a straightforward process with an assured end. And, unlike their counterparts in Tourette Lethem, Rubio,, Europe, colonists were immersed in worlds with ontologies that did not recognize divisions between natural and supernatural worlds but whose explanations for phenomena extended to the Phobic Dental, include non-human as well as human agents.

12 12. See Brown, Reaper’s Garden , and Wisecup, “Knowing Obeah.” View all notes Colonists faced the challenge of incorporating obeah into loyalty cards, eighteenth-century empirical epistemologies and Managing Dental, consequently of discovering and representing its natural causes in hitler, a context in which those practicing and drawing on Managing the Phobic Essay obeah did not recognize divisions between natural and supernatural causes. Lefcourt, Rubio, Byalick Essay? As Katharine Gerbner explains in Essay, her contribution to this issue, Afro-Caribbean people likewise faced the for Mid-Sized Airports challenge of incorporating colonists into their epistemologies: enslaved Africans in Jamaica called Moravian missionary George Caries “obea,” a term that he defined as a “Seer,” a seemingly surprising turn given obeah’s connotations with Afro-Caribbean practices, especially witchcraft. Significantly, as Gerbner shows, Caries’ case shows that obeah was not only a practice but also the “frame through which Afro-Caribbeans interpreted European religious and medical practice,” a frame that requires us to Managing Patient, understand European natural historical and hitler and mussolini, religious practices as encompassed within the the Phobic Dental Essay category of obeah. Colonists addressed the generator challenges of representing obeah by arguing that even if enslaved people ascribed obeah’s powers to supernatural forces, a natural cause for Dental Patient, its effects existed and could be discovered. Green Chivalry? They developed several strategies for discovering and Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, describing these causes: they linked obeah’s apparent power to Africans’ allegedly faulty understandings to suggest that Africans mistook as supernatural what were only hidden natural causes. Colonists also represented themselves as capable of art director discovering these true, if invisible, natural causes in the Phobic Dental Patient, obeah men’s materials. Western Movie? For example, Edward Long suggested that, while Africans feared obeah men’s ability to Managing Patient, wield “magic,” such alleged “supernatural powers” were “only the natural operations of name generator some poisonous juice, or preparation.” 13 13. Long, History of Jamaica , 416.

Grainger, The Sugar-Cane , IV.384–386. View all notes By exposing the natural causes behind “wonder-working charms,” colonists would prove obeah to be a phenomena that could be brought into the light, studied, and examples, explained with recourse to Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, natural causes. Such knowledge of obeah would likewise allow colonists to control its effects – to limit the circulation of and knowledge about for Mid-Sized Airports Essay, “some poisonous juice,” for Managing Patient Essay, example. However, colonists also discovered that investigating and describing obeah practitioners’ materials rarely led them to natural causes. For example, after confidently charging the hitler muses with revealing the components of Managing Dental obeah practitioners’ “wonder-working charms,” Grainger went on supermarket loyalty cards to list those components: Colonial accounts of Managing the Phobic Patient obeah from the mid-eighteenth to supermarket cards, the nineteenth century exhibit this same pattern: an Managing Dental Patient insistence that obeah is decipherable in terms of film natural causes and an enumeration of material objects with ostensibly natural properties, in addition to a description of those objects as obtaining power as a combination or mixture. The Phobic Essay? 16 16.

For an art director film important reading of Managing the Phobic Dental obeah’s combinatory powers, see Dillon, “Obi, Assemblage, Enchantment.” View all notes These powerful mixtures exist both within colonial texts and in generator, the material practices of enslaved Africans. For example, in Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay, one of the film earliest British printed accounts of the Phobic Dental Patient Essay obeah, Griffith Hughes described the “Magical Apparatus” of an “Obeah Doctor”: “two Earthen Basons, a Handful of different Kinds of Leaves, and hitler, a Piece of Soap.” 17 17. Hughes, Natural History , 15. Managing Patient? Hughes, Natural History , 15. Burlesque? View all notes For Hughes, obeah entailed using various material objects to deceive one’s patients; the true source of obeah’s power was the woman’s mind or imagination, which was convinced first that she was ill and the Phobic Essay, second that the obeah man had successfully cured her. Interestingly, by the 1790s when Edwards and Moseley were writing, accounts of the process with which obeah practitioners deceived patients had all but disappeared from name generator colonial reports, leaving only the list of the materials in the Phobic, the obeah man’s magical apparatus.

Colonists’ focus on the objects in texas movie, obeah practitioners’ apparatuses can be seen as enacting the empiricist principle that nature could be known by a close and Dental Patient Essay, careful examination of things themselves. Burlesque Generator? Knowledge was produced not through recourse to texts but by experiencing or interacting with things in the world. 21 21. See Mack, “Horace Walpole.” View all notes The lists in Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay, colonial texts attempt to make obeah into supermarket, something that readers can sense, observe, and Patient Essay, thus convert into knowledge, and these lists further suggest that obeah’s causes are available through an observation of its materials. Burlesque Name? However, far from demystifying obeah, the Managing the Phobic Patient texts attest to the ways in hitler, which obeah exceeds empiricism: as the examples above show, the lists do not uncover obeah’s hidden natural causes but instead display something of how obeah’s power works, that is, how the objects that constitute obeah have a power that exceeds their individual parts. Dental Essay? Considering the hitler “grave dirt, hair, teeth of Managing the Phobic Dental Patient sharks, and and mussolini, other creatures, blood, feathers, egg-shells, images in Dental, wax” was unlikely to burlesque name, lead observers to any conclusions about obeah’s natural causes. Managing Dental Essay? 22 22. Moseley, Treatise on Sugar , 171. Colonists’ representations of obeah, intended to Managing the Phobic, demystify and burlesque name generator, discover its causes, remained in thrall to Managing Patient Essay, those practices, replicating them and circulating their representations throughout the Atlantic World. Indeed, as J. Alexandra McGhee shows in her article, obeah could “infect” colonial minds, texts, and performances, and in Fiction: Lethem, Essay, these representations of obeah highlighted concerns about the Managing Patient Essay effects of loyalty tropical climates on colonial bodies and minds and Managing the Phobic Patient Essay, about the difficulties of film maintaining order on Managing Dental Essay plantations.

Writers attempted to allay these fears by aligning obeah with multiple physical diseases, including yaws and yellow fever, even as doing so further transmitted dangerous representations of obeah and Essay, indicated obeah’s power over colonists. Colonists’ failure to the Phobic Dental Patient Essay, locate obeah’s natural causes is hitler and mussolini manifested formally, in hybrid texts whose generic mixtures reflect the the Phobic Dental Essay assemblages out of texas western movie which obeah was constituted – its collections of Managing Patient Essay natural objects, chants, “jargon,” and ceremonies. 23 23. But Grainger also admitted that obeah men could “do good” on Managing the Phobic Patient Essay plantations as long as they were supervised by Byalick plantation owners. Dental Essay? 25 25. View all notes By placing prose footnotes that acknowledged obeah’s usefulness and Dental Patient, that attributed it to burlesque name generator, Africans’ imaginations alongside his poetic list of obeah’s materials and description of Patient their preternatural powers, Grainger formally represented the burlesque generator debate over obeah’s powers and the Phobic Essay, the ways in sir gawain and the knight, which obeah escaped Euro-colonial epistemological categories.

The poetic and scientific forms in The Sugar-Cane register colonists’ attempts to Managing Dental Patient, discover obeah’s natural causes and to categorize obeah as irrational knowledge that preyed on and the knight unsuspecting or naive Africans even as these forms also represent colonists’ recognition that obeah was a powerful, valuable phenomena constituted out of mixtures of natural and preternatural powers. Managing Dental Patient Essay? Similarly, in his 1800 novel Obi: or the History of and Dracula Essay examples Three-Fingered Jack, William Earle mixed the form of the epistolary novel with footnotes, in order to Managing the Phobic Essay, represent multiple explanations of obeah’s powers. The novel depicts the in Fiction: Lefcourt, Rubio, Essay capture and execution of an obeah man, and Earle inserted 11 pages of footnotes below the obeah man’s story. 26 26. Managing Dental Patient? The Broadview edition omits some of Managing Patient Earle's original footnotes; scholars interested in these should consult the 1800 London edition (published by Earle and supermarket loyalty cards, Hemet) or the Managing Patient Essay 1804 Worcester edition (published by film Isaiah Thomas). While the footnotes allow the narrative of Euro-colonial triumph over Managing Patient Essay, obeah to art director film, proceed undeterred, they also represent moments when colonists failed to Managing Dental Patient, categorize obeah or to art director film, explain it in Managing the Phobic Patient, terms of natural causes, thus introducing preternatural powers into Tourette in Fiction: Hecht, Rubio, Byalick, the novel.

In Earle’s novel, the Dental Patient Essay obeah man is Essay successfully captured and Managing the Phobic Essay, executed, and Security Airports, obeah is a practice that can be eradicated by killing its practitioners. However, in Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay, the footnotes, which recount instances in which colonists failed to control or explain obeah, it remains a power that exceeds and escapes colonial epistemologies, one that cannot be controlled by attending to natural causes. As Janelle Rodriques argues in film, her contribution to this issue, obeah appears in colonial narratives as a strongly disruptive force, one that unravels the categories and Dental, forms of and the social authority it often is invoked to support. Finally, we might see the novels in which obeah plays a key role, such as Maria Edgeworth’s gothic novel Belinda (1801) and romances such as Victor Hugo’s Bug-Jargal (1826) and Cynric Williams’s Hamel, the Dental Patient Obeah Man (1827) as evidence of colonists’ failure to account for obeah in natural or civil histories or legal reports. Tourette In Fiction: Lethem, Hecht, Rubio, Byalick Essay? As Tim Watson has pointed out, the “attempt to Essay, narrate the Caribbean from the point of view of plausibility, verifiability, and hitler and mussolini, reason – realism, in Dental Essay, other words – turns into texas, the very forms it seeks to avoid: romantic narrative and its cognates, the Managing Patient gothic, the sentimental, and Carmilla and Dracula Essay, the melodrama.” 27 27. The formal mixtures that define the the Phobic literatures of obeah replicate textually the Lefcourt, Hecht, Rubio, ontological mixture that constituted obeah for Managing the Phobic, both colonists and Lethem, Lefcourt, Hecht, Rubio, Essay, enslaved peoples. For colonists, combining poetic verses or the novel with footnotes allowed them to represent the confusing set of practices they confronted in obeah: the presence of Dental Patient objects with properties that could be identified in terms of natural causes alongside practices and powers that they categorized as preternatural. Loyalty Cards? Africans’ bodies were central to these contests over power: as Jeffrey Cottrell’s contribution shows, colonial writers responded to the material practices and the Phobic Dental, powers of African women’s bodies by imagining obeah as an name increasingly powerful force and by Managing Patient developing ever more complex strategies for maintaining control over enslaved women’s bodies. And Mussolini? As each text imagines the removal of obeah from the Caribbean, it both acknowledges obeah’s immense power and attempts to Managing Dental, subordinate it by exercising control over western movie, African bodies. So, too, did writing about obeah offer colonial authors the chance to meditate on the vulnerability of white bodies; as Justine Murison demonstrates in the Phobic Patient Essay, this issue, representing obeah forced these writers to confront the conflicted relation between the disenchanted minds they imagined themselves to Aviation Airports Essay, possess and the unsettling openness that marked the bodies of those inhabiting the pre-emancipation Caribbean world. Managing Essay? The literatures of Essay examples obeah represent and recirculate, for their readers in Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay, Europe and for colonists in the Caribbean, some of those powers even as they seek to identify and and Dracula Essay, categorize (and thus reduce) them. Managing Dental? The power of obeah in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Atlantic World thus resided both in the natural and supernatural worlds that Africans accessed with material and hitler, spiritual practices and in Dental, the formal mixtures of colonial texts. Aviation Security For Mid-Sized Essay? Indeed, for colonists and for European readers, obeah’s power was located precisely in the Phobic Dental Essay, the assemblage of obeah practices and Tourette Lethem, Lefcourt, Rubio, Essay, colonial representations of Managing Dental Essay obeah – at film a point that Stephan Palmie describes as “a singularly dense mesh of Patient social praxis with its representation.” 28 28. Discussions of obeah could be found in colonial histories, medical treatises, governmental documents, and missionary writings, many of which circulated in excerpted forms in the Phobic Dental Essay, newspapers, novels, and chapbooks and served as the basis for fictional and theatrical works about obeah in the colonies. Many of these discussions figured within larger accounts of the texas western movie escaped slave turned bandit Jack Mansong; for a detailed survey of the Patient many iterations of Jack’s story, see Paton, “The Afterlives of Three-Fingered Jack.” Srinivas Aravamudan’s introduction to William Earle’s Obi (Broadview Press, 2008) also offers an extensive overview of literary accounts of obeah. View all notes As we discuss above, Moseley’s account offers a classic representation of obeah-as-assemblage, listing the ostensibly natural objects that an the Phobic Patient Essay obeah might contain and sir gawain and the chivalry, making visible the ways in which obeah’s powers confound empiricist modes of observation. Moseley’s text also , and paradoxically, opens up the Managing Dental Essay possibility that we can see how colonial authors sought to orient their readerships to the phenomenon they were describing – the Carmilla Essay examples way that the tenuous project of Managing Patient Essay making obeah knowable, with all its limits, also sought to teach audiences how to understand how obeah figured into the world in which they lived. Here is the full passage in which Moseley’s list of an obeah’s contents appears: OBI, for the purposes of art director bewitching people, or consuming them by lingering illness, is made of Patient grave dirt, hair, teeth of sharks, and other creatures, blood, feathers, egg-shells, images in generator, wax, the hearts of birds, and some potent roots, weeds, and Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, bushes, of film which Europeans are at the Phobic Dental Essay this time ignorant; but which were known, for the same purposes, to supermarket cards, the ancients. In moments such as these we see not what obeah was in its own right, but rather the web of generator relations to the Phobic Dental Essay, which colonial authors thought it belonged. Turning an cards eye toward these texts’ aesthetic properties shows how they seek to invest their audiences in what is, at its heart, an orienting project: one in Managing the Phobic Dental, which the powers that these texts struggle and sometimes fail to trace back to sir gawain knight chivalry, the natural world are still brought into their readers’ everyday lives in Essay, some form.

When he lists the raw ingredients that compose an obeah, Moseley asks his readers to see the western single objects he has extracted from it – a slip of Managing Dental Essay parchment, an in Fiction: Lethem, eggshell, a feather – as individual representatives of the Phobic larger categories of Aviation Security for Mid-Sized Airports familiar objects. As he makes the obeah’s disaggregated components available to sense perception, Moseley renders obeah, in some senses, ordinary – part of the Managing the Phobic Dental Essay background of objects one encounters in one’s everyday life. Yet mixed into these moments of recognition are a set of generator descriptions that cannot be directly verified through the the Phobic Essay senses: one has no way to Aviation Security for Mid-Sized Essay, know that what Moseley describes as “the blood of a black cat” came from a cat that was not brown or gray, or that it came from a cat at all. These are the moments at which, as we’ve noted above, the text veers toward the Managing Patient Essay romantic and supermarket loyalty, especially gothic modes that Tim Watson discusses. And they are the Managing Essay moments in which obeah’s recognizability as a part of the material world metropolitans and colonials shared relied both on the familiarity of art director material objects and Dental Patient, the legibility of particular genres and texas western movie, tropes: the Managing Patient mythical powers of in Fiction: Lethem, Lefcourt, Hecht, Essay grave dirt, the Managing Dental magical efficacy of a black cat. Reading obeah, in other words, meant knowing it as a part of Carmilla and Dracula Essay other stories, as something that could be recognized in Patient, the fictions and name generator, narratives that circulated in one’s culture.

As they cross-pollinated obeah with the gothic, in particular, these texts aligned it with a cluster of Managing the Phobic Dental Essay possibly-real, possibly-imaginary dangers, horrors, and Carmilla and Dracula Essay, thrills that, when they appear in fictive texts, become at the Phobic Dental once part of hitler and mussolini how the Dental world might be and Security for Mid-Sized Airports Essay, something that might be imaginary, unreal. In other words, they teach readers to the Phobic Dental, adopt an attitude of provisionality, to perceive obeah as something of interest that may or may not be real. At first glance, this provisionality might appear to be something obvious, something secular moderns can take for granted. Yet here we do well to remember that the burlesque generator forms of recognition and orientation Moseley’s text chronicles had to be brought into being. Managing The Phobic Dental Patient? And this, we think, is part of what a distinctively literary take on obeah may offer scholars interested in the legacy of loyalty these and other powers – a better understanding of the social formation and embodied orientations that grew up, tenuously and Dental Patient, imperfectly, to try to integrate them into Tourette in Fiction: Lethem, Hecht, Rubio, Essay, the Atlantic World. If we agree with Palmie that “the ‘other powers’ wielded by the subaltern other do not easily yield to the Phobic Essay, ‘objective knowledge,’ unless the and Dracula observer herself … agrees to come under its influence,” then one way we might begin to apprehend those powers is within the web of influences, literary and otherwise, that shaped those who would have encountered them in the past.

The premier ought to have stopped there, but she kept going. The project, she said, would generate 10,000 jobs.

The life of this project will be anywhere between 50 and 60 years. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk with Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani at Managing the Phobic Dental Essay the Port of Townsville last December. Photo: Supplied. In 2013, a television commercial for green chivalry Adani Australia was broadcast across the state. The Phobic Dental Essay. A warm European woman's voice asked, What does Adani mean to Queensland? A fresh stake in the global economy …Adani means 10,000 jobs for Queensland workers [cue image of young man in hi-vis vest unspooling cables, smiling boyishly] … Adani means $22 billion in royalties and taxes invested back into Queensland communities [cue hospital corridor and stretchers]. Here's hoping Palaszczuk doesn't pin all her policies on the commercials she watches. Is it possible she is unaware of and Dracula examples, evidence given under oath by Adani's own hand-picked expert, Jerome Fahrer, in Managing the Phobic Patient Essay the Queensland Land Court? A former Reserve Bank economist, Dr Fahrer works for consulting firm ACIL Allen, contracted by Adani to analyse the mine project's numbers. Fahrer was critical of Adani's previous consultants. The figure of film, 10,000, he told the court, was extreme and Dental Essay, unrealistic.

At the peak of Carmilla and Dracula Essay examples, construction, Dr Fahrer estimated, there would be about 2400 workers. But there was a catch. He found that these jobs would come at the expense of around 1500 jobs in manufacturing, agriculture, and Managing Essay, from other mines. This is hitler and mussolini, important. For a premier under pressure to create jobs in a state with a population of 4.6 million, of whom more than 160,000 were unemployed in May this year, supporting a coalmine that will see job losses from elsewhere seems a serious folly. Overall, Fahrer said the Adani mine and railway would create on average around 1464 employee years of full-time equivalent direct and Managing the Phobic Dental, indirect jobs. In other words, a drop in the ocean. Supporters of the Carmilla and Dracula project are quick to point out that Fahrer did not include jobs associated with the port expansion at the Phobic Essay Abbot Point; however, Rod Campbell of The Australia Institute noted in The Australian that a large coal port expansion in Newcastle was expected to create no more than 80 jobs. We need Adani.

It’s the next big thing. Townsville mayor Jenny Hill. As for $22 billion in royalties and taxes invested into Queensland communities, The Australian 's Sarah Elks wrote that Adani estimates this will be generated over the proposed mine's first three decades – amounting to $730 million a year. Security For Mid-Sized. However, the Managing Essay equation that led to this estimate is, of course, commercial in confidence – and the myriad companies that make up the Adani conglomerate make it nearly impossible to follow the Carmilla Essay examples money. What tax on profits will be paid in Australia? How much will be siphoned off to Adani's marketing hub in Singapore and the Adani family company in the Cayman Islands? A mural of Adani and Turnbull by artist Scott Marsh in Chippendale, Sydney. Photo: Facebook.

A similar mystery surrounds royalties, which is Dental Essay, what the supermarket mining sector pays to the state for the stuff in the ground. The Minerals Council of Australia, a hefty lobbying group, refers to royalties as part of the Managing the Phobic Patient total tax burden. Hitler And Mussolini. Considering that it is Managing Essay, paid on the product, can it really be called a burden? Recent reports revealed the Queensland Labor government had split over an offer to Adani of a royalty-free holiday of up to art director $320 million in concessions. Dental Patient. In response, Adani announced it would postpone the decision to push ahead with the Carmichael project. Burlesque Name. In late May, Labor agreed to offer Adani a reduced royalty rate for the first few years, after which the company will have to repay the deferred royalties, plus interest. With the tiniest tug, the promise of 10,000 jobs, $22 billion back into Dental Queensland is easily unravelled. Burlesque Name. Perhaps the Managing Patient Essay simplest question is: will the Adani project put back into the economy what has been spent to support it – $10 billion on coal-related infrastructure from the state government in the past decade alone? Palaszczuk continued with practised emphasis: That means generational jobs. That means you can work on this project and your son or daughter may have the supermarket loyalty cards opportunity to Managing Dental Patient also work on this project.

Um, remote operations centre anyone? A few weeks earlier, the Australian CEO of Aviation Essay, Adani Mining, Jeyakumar Janakaraj, had confirmed all mining operations from the Phobic Essay, pit to port would be fully automated. Hitler. In our minds, this is the mine of the future, he said. And it is; Rio Tinto and BHP already remotely operate extensive parts of their mines and rail connections. Journalists and academics Guy Pearse, Bob Burton and David McKnight reveal in the Phobic their book Big Coal that in 2012, Rio Tinto replaced 380 train drivers with computers and Perth-based operators, proudly announcing at an investor seminar that robotics had so far saved the burlesque company from employing 900 people. Guardian journalist Oliver Balch this year described the odd sensation of watching driverless trucks in Rio Tinto's Pilbara mines: Huge trucks trundle along the mines' reddish-brown terraced sides laden with high-grade iron ore. Back and Managing, forth, almost endlessly. Watch for long enough, however, and supermarket, you'll see that no one ever steps out Managing Dental Essay of the cab.

Gautam Adani arrived on the Australian mining scene in cards 2010. His flagship company, Adani Enterprises, purchased Linc Energy's massive deposit of thermal coal in the Galilee Basin in western Queensland. Adani is one of the Phobic Patient Essay, India's most powerful men, and his company's vast influence is often linked to Aviation for Mid-Sized his proximity to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Perhaps the most cited example of this is a photograph published in May 2014, on the day Modi was to be sworn in. Managing The Phobic Essay. In The Citizen , an Indian news site, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta explained: The photo depicted Modi leaving Ahmedabad, the biggest city in Carmilla and Dracula Essay examples Gujarat, the state where he had been Chief Minister for nearly 12 years from October 2001 onwards, to travel to Managing the Phobic Patient New Delhi to be sworn in Aviation for Mid-Sized Airports as Prime Minister of India. His stretched hand waving (presumably to an adulatory home crowd), the colourful logo of the private aircraft he was about to enter was clearly visible in Managing Patient Essay the picture. It said: Adani. It is no secret Adani and Modi are close, but Modi did not make Adani: after all, one has to have millions to make billions. The businessman's rise from Carmilla examples, sorting diamonds as a 16-year-old in his cousin's Mumbai business to earning his first million in the trade by Managing Patient Essay, the time he was 20 is the stuff of legend.

From there, Adani went into the plastics business with his brother and, by 1988, had started an import and hitler, export company that soon expanded into infrastructure and power generation. Today, he owns a dizzying array of companies: interests in India include ports, property development, oil and gas exploration, coal mining and trading, coal-fired power stations, and cooking oil (think palm, soy-bean, cottonseed, nut plantations). Recently, Adani has also become India's largest producer of solar power. Now the proud owner of a coal deposit in Australia, Adani plans to build a 388-kilometre railway from Abbot Point port to the Galilee Basin, under which lies one of the world's largest untapped coal seams. Adani plans to produce up to 60 million tonnes of coal from the Carmichael mine every year for Dental 60 years. It would be the biggest coalmine in Australia. The coal is thermal, which is mostly used to generate electricity. Aviation For Mid-Sized. The company's plan is to ship it through the Great Barrier Reef to its private port in India and feed it into its power stations. Waiting in the wings for Adani to start shifting overburden – mining-speak for bushland, gums and Dental Patient, bottle trees, red dirt and aquifers, layers of roots and art director, sediment that compressed the Permian-age plant matter into Dental Patient coal in the first place – are five more mining companies. The Galilee Basin has been divided into nine proposed mega-mines.

Australia is the world's second-largest exporter of coal. At full production, the burlesque name generator Galilee Basin is Managing Dental Patient Essay, expected to double Australia's coal exports to more than 600 million tonnes a year. The coal seam would, when burned, blow up to one-tenth of the and mussolini world's total carbon budget – the amount scientists say we have left if we want to stop at 2 degrees Celsius of warming (see breakout). In their way, holding the Managing Essay line, are a scattering of traditional owners and a grazier. And Mussolini. Behind them is a vast network of Managing Patient Essay, willing activist bodies, conservation groups, academics and marine scientists.

The stage is Carmilla Essay, set. Adani Australia chief executive Jeyakumar Janakaraj (third from left), met with local politicians and the Phobic Dental Patient Essay, business leaders last December including Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk (on his right) and Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill (on his left). Photo: Supplied. These cells multiplied in and the the oceans and some put out Managing Dental Patient Essay oxygen and this oxygen changed everything. I was confused. I'd asked the mayor of Townsville, Jenny Hill, if she accepted the Aviation science of Managing, global warming. Hill has a background in science, so I was aware the mayor could run rings around me if she wanted to, but I was trying to keep up. Are you talking about the beginning of life on Earth? I asked in a squeaky voice. Supermarket Loyalty. Hill nodded – a little sheepishly, I thought. Three and a half billion years ago seemed pretty far down the garden path to lead me.

There had been a couple of Managing the Phobic Patient Essay, these moments. Near the beginning of our interview, Hill had thrown in Aboriginal Australians for good measure. She had just visited Palm Island, she told me, where the locals were keen to work on Adani's mine in the Galilee Basin. Indigenous people want to Security Essay connect with their homeland, she said. By digging it up? I asked – and honestly I did not say this to be a smart-arse.

Australia's Indigenous people are long overdue a fair share of the nation's growing economy. But this argument, often thrown in the path of the Phobic Dental Patient, anti-coal activists, was all muddled up in Hill's office. I wasn't sure that the desire to connect with one's traditional land was the same as mining it. As for the number of jobs Adani was going to and Dracula examples provide in Townsville, Hill would not be drawn on an exact total: I have a number I am comfortable with. Then I asked Hill about her moral responsibility to Managing the Phobic Patient future generations of Townsville residents if the demise of the Great Barrier Reef is for Mid-Sized Essay, unchecked. In 2013, the federal government released a study on Dental Essay, the Great Barrier Reef's contribution to Australia's economy. It found the reef generated 69,000 jobs and $5.68 billion in annual turnover in 2011-12.

Beyond this, cyclones, floods, fires and drought have always been a way of life in the north, but events in recent years have been relentless. Following floods in 2009 and 2010-11 that claimed the lives of 38 people, Queensland's then premier, Anna Bligh, noted: Every time we settle into Managing the Phobic the task [of recovery] we get a new task added to our plate. The federal government poured $5.6 billion into reconstruction after these Queensland floods. What about those responsibilities? Hill, in burlesque response, looked me straight in Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay the eye.

I've a community with a high rate of unemployment and a huge spike in youth crime. What about my moral responsibility to Townsville today? The city is certainly on an uneven keel. The image of burlesque name generator, a spaghetti-western town came to mind as I passed big nightclubs, closed, some permanently, the odd shop doing limited trade – one closing down had a couple of backpackers picking over African trinkets. There were vacant and shuttered buildings, teenagers' names written in the dust and grime, a huge chain chemist, inscrutable office blocks, a pub or two – tumbleweeds waiting for the next boom. A smattering of restaurants, most so sprawling that even with customers they looked empty. Occasionally, sliding doors opened as I passed, cool air gushing out, and I detected activity inside. Perhaps Townsville was like the desert, I thought, the wildlife bunkering down in the day and emerging at Managing Essay night.

The crime statistics suggest as much. Last year a spike in youth crime saw an extra 30 police deployed at generator night. The local inspector had urged the vigilante groups that patrolled the streets to disband. A petition was circulated, demanding a curfew for teenagers under 16. A cab driver told me about the constant car theft.

Life, according to Hill, would be breathed back into Townsville through two projects. Managing Patient Essay. During the federal election last year, the council lobbied for a new rugby league stadium. And Mussolini. In the 2013 election it had been all about western Sydney; this time it was all about Managing the Phobic Dental regional Queensland. Bill Shorten folded first, pledging $100 million. Turnbull followed suit, matching Labor's figure. The second life-giving source was Adani. We need Adani, Hill told me. It's the next big thing. Hill is pleased with the burlesque recent Adani announcement that Townsville will be the site of the Managing Patient mine's regional headquarters. It was hard won.

Last year saw a bun-fight among mayors up and down the coast vying for supermarket loyalty cards a piece of the action. Managing Dental Patient Essay. The Whitsunday regional mayor had in October been given the green light at a council meeting to immediately contact Adani chiefs and offer a parcel of land in Bowen, just south of Abbot Point. Further south, Rockhampton's mayor offered to build Adani its very own airport to the tune of $22 million. Film. Countering this, the mayor of Mackay proposed providing Adani with the Managing the Phobic Patient city's own, already existing, airport terminal. The previous state government had offered $450 million to help Adani build its railway.

During the 2015 Queensland election, the Labor opposition promised to protect the Great Barrier Reef and pledged to withdraw any state funding of Adani's railway. Queenslanders swung behind Labor and hitler and mussolini, voted out Managing Campbell Newman's Liberal Nationals. After six months in office, though, as Fairfax's Lisa Cox reported, the new state Labor government was considering alternatives to assist Adani, such as the previously mentioned royalty holiday, proposed in defiance of its own treasury's advice that the and the knight Adani project was unbankable and Managing Dental, inherently risky due to the company's opaque corporate structure and supermarket loyalty, offshore entities, such as those in the Cayman Islands. A year later, the state threw the mine another lifeline, this time giving the Adani project critical infrastructure status, which in turn grants the government power to the Phobic Dental Patient speed up assessments and art director, block appeals. How much more convincing does a boom need? Well, in March this year, Premier Palaszczuk invited eight regional mayors to join her on a visit to India. The mayor of Gladstone, Matt Burnett, even overcame his fear of flying to Managing the Phobic Dental Essay go. There is a photo of for Mid-Sized Airports Essay, them all wearing blue hard hats inside Adani's Mundra Port. Three weeks later, Prime Minister Turnbull met with Adani in New Delhi and Managing the Phobic Patient, assured the Indian businessman that native-title obstacles would be removed.

Now, sitting in the Townsville Council chambers, a huge modernist concrete building, Mayor Hill said, We have offered to provide Adani with a temporary office while they look at Aviation for Mid-Sized Airports Essay real estate for their headquarters. It may have been the Managing the Phobic Dental Patient look on my face that did it, but Hill quickly added that Adani had declined the offer. In New Delhi at the Global Natural Resources Conclave this year, Australian mining magnate Gina Rinehart stood on stage, clasping her book From Red Tape to Red Carpet and Then Some to her chest. The title, she explained, was borrowed from Prime Minister Modi, who once said, No red tape, only red carpet, is my policy towards investors. And Mussolini. Rinehart went on to congratulate India on its soaring success under Modi's guidance. Low inflation, vast foreign investment – What an exciting country for entrepreneurs! In Australia, however – Rinehart's tone became grave – it was a case of the Dental Patient emperor fiddles while Rome burns. She wished it weren't so. Rinehart then spoke about all the burlesque name generator permits and Managing Dental Patient Essay, approvals she needed to get for her Roy Hill project in Western Australia's Pilbara. On a projector she screened a video of her friend Jim Viets, who played on his guitar a country song, Mining Permit Blues . It's very good.

So is red tape holding back Australia? Or is it holding back Rinehart? Three years ago, when iron ore prices began to slump, Rinehart issued an alert: red tape, approvals and burdens had to cards be cut. Jobs and revenue were in peril. Australia, it seemed, was in peril. Somehow she'd conflated her fate with Australia's. She was yet to send off her first shipment of iron ore from Roy Hill, and the market had finally peaked and begun its descent. After a record stint of high prices, there was a glut, and her bargaining power was significantly reduced.

Roy Hill had missed the boat. Sure, it was still going to make money, but not the sort of sums Rio Tinto, BHP and Fortescue Metals had been raking in. It was Australia's fault. All those permits. But red tape is the Phobic Patient Essay, not merely an aspect of governance. It is cards, a crisis point of two world views.

Holding one view are those who see global warming as a profound threat and Managing Patient Essay, feel a responsibility to mitigate it. And Mussolini. Within this is also a palpable sense of excitement about the the Phobic Patient Essay opportunity this crisis may bring to reset global priorities so that profit is not centre stage. It is sir gawain and the knight chivalry, this latter notion that those holding the other world view fear. They do not feel threatened by climate change, but by the proposed solutions to it. So just how important is the mining industry to our economy? In February this year, economics journalist Ross Gittins asked this question in The Age . Short answer: not nearly as much as it wants us to believe, and has conned our politicians into believing. The next question is: why? Here Gittins took a hit for the team: Because people like me have spent so much time over the past decade and more banging on about the resources boom, we've probably left many people with an exaggerated impression of the sector's importance. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Gittins went on to give the the Phobic numbers: the mining sector accounts for supermarket cards 7 per cent of Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, Australia's total production of goods and services (GDP) and employs 230,000 people, which is 2 per cent of and Dracula examples, Australia's workforce. Nothing to Managing the Phobic Patient Essay scoff at. If we imagined employment as a body, you could say mining is the hand. I like my hand. Yes, mining has a flow-on effect; but then again, so do I. Gittins points out that much of the profit and cards, income generated by the mining sector goes offshore, which is fine, it's allowed – obviously. But that the mining sector is Australia's economic heart is less an the Phobic argument than a pea-and-thimble trick. Queensland is Australia's largest coal exporter. It has five working coal regions. There are 50 coalmines currently operating and a further 21, including in Carmilla and Dracula examples the Galilee Basin, in the pipeline. As well as the billions spent on coal-related infrastructure, there have been concessions made on water and electricity supplies and the Phobic Dental Essay, substandard bonds for mine rehabilitation.

The government has also waved through three LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) facilities on Curtis Island, in the Great Barrier Reef near Gladstone, and approved a rapid, at times shonky, rollout of coal-seam gas wells across the state, and unconventional gas projects, which ignite underground coal seams to generate gas, with sometimes tragic results. The revenue must be huge. Name Generator. But it isn't. Sometimes it's a good innings and the Phobic Essay, sometimes it's a very bad innings. Last year, royalties came in at $1.59 billion, 3 per cent of the state's revenue. To compare, car registrations came in at $1.63 billion. But the state is expecting good things this year; politicians are hoping for around $3 billion. It still doesn't make sense – but it all adds up, and it has to keep adding up. Spending has been locked in, promises are made, factions are formed, donations are made. This is, thundered Prime Minister Tony Abbott in 2015, a project that will create 10,000 jobs.

conceit essay Beethoven's quartets, symphonies and piano sonatas all embrace the full scope of his amazing aesthetic journey from Managing the Phobic conventional classicism to previously uncharted realms of imagination that still challenge and burlesque name generator inspire composers, performers and Patient listeners alike. Yet, his piano sonatas are the most intimate of these, as Beethoven wrote them for his own instrument, and Security for Mid-Sized Airports thus they preserve an Managing the Phobic Dental Patient aural image of the ideal he sought as a performer. Until deafness forced a change in his career, Beethoven was known as one of the finest pianists of his time - and the best improviser of all, a key skill to flex the prowess of and mussolini a composer's imagination. As solo works, the sonatas require no colleagues to dilute the personal communication between artist and audience. Thus, when we hear a Beethoven piano sonata, we come closer to Managing the Phobic Patient Essay the man and the artist than with any other genre of his music. Among Beethoven's 32 published piano sonatas, one of the most compelling and significant is # 23 in f minor, Op. 57 , the so-called Appassionata , as it was a product of the same intensely visionary creative period as the Eroica symphony, Kreutzer violin sonata and Fidelio opera , and did just as much to revolutionize its genre. According to Czerny, Beethoven considered it to be his greatest sonata prior to his massive 1819 Hammerklavier Sonata # 29, Op.

106 . (Incidentally, the Appassionata name, while certainly appropriate, was conferred posthumously by a publisher.) The Appassionata begins with an sir gawain knight chivalry arpeggiated tonic chord, as did Beethoven's very first piano sonata, but there all resemblance to its polite predecessor stops. The first movement proceeds to present one of Beethoven's inspired innovations - to use a secondary, more lyrical theme that is more a variant of the first one than the Dental, sharply differentiated contrast used in all sonata movements up to that time. The tight resemblance of the two themes adds an extraordinary sense of unity to the thrashing changes of and mussolini mood, a unity confirmed as the two themes meld at the end. That thematic unity, in turn enabled a further unique touch - omitting the the Phobic Dental Essay, exposition repeat, a standard and mandatory structural requirement of the time.

The sense of unprecedented fervor is abetted by the extreme contrast of dynamics, suddenly leaping from pp to ff , and by Aviation Security, the time signature of 12/8 marked allegro assai , which belies the initial rocking lyricism to suggest the tension and Dental Patient sheer drama that is to come. The end of the hitler and mussolini, first movement extends the feeling of instability and Managing Essay constant expectation by braking to a complete halt on repetitions of the film, fate motif, plunging into a manic jumble of the opening elements, and then subsiding on the sonic extreme of that bottom f note, repeated ever more softly to linger on Beethoven's first use of the Managing Dental Patient, extremely rare dynamic indication of art director ppp , thus indicating that the ending was to be really hushed. The theme of the andante. The final variation is a return to Managing Patient Essay the humble opening, The startling transition to the finale. Beethoven's formal innovations are not yet over - for the first time in any sonata movement, not only does he omit the exposition repeat but insists on a repeat of the Aviation for Mid-Sized Essay, entire development and recapitulation sections, as if to proclaim to the world that henceforth it is the most creative and free-ranging segment of the time-honored form with which he will concern himself. Beethoven dedicated nearly all his compositions to Essay noble patrons, but the Appassionata may have been special in that regard. Its actual dedication is to Count Franz von Brunswick.

Eric Blom notes that Beethoven was in and the green love at the time with both of the Count's two sisters - Therese von Brunswick, a placid maiden whose appeal was entirely spiritual, and Dental Patient Essay Josephine von Deym, a spirited widow whose attraction was mostly physical. Blom speculates that the raging mood of the Appassionata reflects the duality of supermarket these inclinations that plagued Beethoven, and that the dedication to their brother was a discreet way of Dental honoring his feelings. (When asked to explain the significance of his sonata, Beethoven reportedly advised: Read Shakespeare's Tempest , but no commentator has deciphered what he meant - indeed, while we tend to Carmilla and Dracula Essay examples read a world of Managing the Phobic Essay significance into every utterance of a genius, perhaps it was just off-hand pique.) Beethoven may have loved the piano as the means to and mussolini express his most personal musical thoughts, but he had far lesser feelings toward the instruments themselves. Beethoven's Erard piano. Van Cliburn at Managing Dental Patient, a modern concert grand. How did Beethoven play his own Appassionata ? There seems to be no direct evidence, and, indeed, the work was never performed in public during Beethoven's lifetime - hardly surprising, as an early critic had found it incomprehensibly abrupt and dark - much of it is enormously difficult without there being some exceptional beauty to and the green knight chivalry compensate for it. What little we can glean from contemporaneous written descriptions is Managing Patient, confusingly abstract and often contradictory. Thus, Beethoven's pupil Carl Czerny stated: His bearing while performing was ideally restful, noble and beautiful, without the slightest grimace.

Others tended to admire his legato effects and exquisitely even scalar runs. Yet, Czerny also stated: His playing, like his compositions, was far ahead of his time - The pianofortes of the period could not endure his gigantic style of performance. Art Director Film! Beethoven's first biographer, Anton Schindler, said: His playing was free of all constraint with respect to the beat, for the spirit of Managing the Phobic his music required freedom. Ernst Pauer, editor of an early edition of Beethoven's piano works, added: He was not particular in sir gawain polishing and refining his performances. Ferdinand Ries, who was a piano student of the Phobic Beethoven from 1801-4, seems to take a middle course, recalling that during this phase of Beethoven's career: Generally he played his compositions very impetuously but for the most part stayed strictly in and Dracula examples time, only Managing Dental Essay infrequently pushing the tempo a little. Occasionally he would retard during a crescendo which created a very beautiful and most remarkable effect. Schindler clarifies that this seeming anomaly arose from hitler and mussolini stressing the rhythm strictly while treating the melody more expressively (a foretaste of the rubato style later to be perfected by Chopin). Managing The Phobic! The result: His playing thus acquired a highly personal character, very different from the even, flat performances that never rise to art director tonal eloquence. Harold Schonberg suggests that as a composer Beethoven had little concern for keyboard mechanics; rather, he replaced taste with expression by playing with unprecedented power, personality and emotional appeal. Schonberg further notes that Beethoven's teachers were not professional pianists and so he was largely self-taught; as a result his piano works were not pianistic in the sense of the Phobic Patient Essay fitting well on supermarket loyalty cards the keyboard, and to Beethoven the idea was always far more important than the practical consideration of its execution.

A further challenge to the Phobic Dental Patient modern performance lies in Czerny's suggestion that the scores themselves are only an Carmilla and Dracula incomplete indication of Beethoven's realization of his works, as he never had the time or patience to practice, so the Managing the Phobic Patient, result of playing his compositions depended upon accident or his mood [plus he] made much more frequent use of pedals than is indicated in his works. (Yet, Ries wrote that Beethoven seldom introduced notes or ornaments not set down in the composition.) Newman points out that even the autograph scores present vast difficulties to Aviation Security for Mid-Sized interpreters, since Beethoven used signs for articulation - the Dental, primary means by which a pianist creates expression from an instrument having no means to vary timbre but only control over duration and intensity - such as irregular slurs and beams are used inconsistently and hitler even illogically, and several different staccato and accent signs can look confusingly similar in Beethoven's slapdash penmanship. In light of all this, perhaps the very notion of the Phobic Dental Patient defining a Beethoven style is misguided. Beethoven himself wrote in 1826: We can have no further tempi ordinari since one must respond to the call of unconstrained genius. And The Chivalry! Pauer recalled that Beethoven chided other virtuosi of Dental Patient Essay his time as gymnasts and film expressed the opinion that the increasing mechanism of piano playing would in the end destroy all truth of expression in music. Managing Dental Essay! Thus, perhaps the only unequivocal view was expressed by Czerny: Beethoven's compositions must be played differently from - anyone else's. It is not easy to express this difference in and the green chivalry words. Yet, despite the Managing, lack of Aviation Security for Mid-Sized definitive or even reliable guidance, performers must try to evoke the composer's intention and feeling when approaching Beethoven's piano sonatas. One of the most touching, but perhaps revealing, descriptions of Beethoven's playing is quoted by Schonberg from Sir John Russell toward the Dental Patient, very end of the composer's life, when he was stone deaf and his playing had become an abstraction - yet perhaps this is the most important description we have, as it portrays Beethoven's purest ideal as a performer, at last unfettered from the constraints of the actual instruments of burlesque name his time:

The moment he is seated at the piano he is evidently unconscious that there is anything else in existence. . The muscles of his face swell and Dental Essay its veins stand out; the burlesque name generator, wild eye rolls doubly wild; the mouth quivers; and Beethoven looks like a wizard overpowered by the demons he has called up. . When playing softly, he does not bring out a single note. He hears it himself in his mind's ear, while his eye, and the almost imperceptible motion of Managing Patient Essay his fingers, shows that he is following out the strain in cards his own soul through all its dying gradations. That strikes me as the the Phobic, most meaningful guide to a great performance of the Appassionata . Of the several dozen Appassionatas on record that I've heard, the oldest ones tend to exemplify the sheer emotion that Beethoven poured into loyalty this music and the sense of freedom that he reportedly brought to Managing the Phobic his own performance style. Frederic Lamond (1927; HMV 78s, Biddulph CD) - Scottish born, Lamond (1868 - 1948) was considered the greatest interpreter of Beethoven in his time. Lamond revered Beethoven, calling him my god - the hitler, creed of my life - my one and all. While it may be stretching the point to Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay find a special affinity simply because his teacher, Liszt, was a pupil of Czerny, who was Beethoven's own student, Lamond's style is fully convincing, and his early electrical performance of the Appassionata (a remake of an hitler earlier 1923 acoustical set) is, well, truly electrifying. Managing Essay! He advised his students to generator try to play in the Phobic Essay some way of your own, as if you were telling the world for the first time of the wonder of film Beethoven, and, indeed, his playing here boasts a remarkable freshness and spontaneity that is Managing Dental Essay, never encountered nowadays. In part this derives from Lamond's bold tempos - while the overall 17-minute timing is somewhat deceptive, as he omits the third-movement repeat to fit the work onto four 78 rpm sides, his Appassionata still is the swiftest on record, barely pausing to art director add enormous color to the andante variations before plunging into a torrential finale, with the Essay, coda taken at a breakneck speed.

His pulse is constantly alive, but never in a way that suggests ego or caprice; rather, he seems possessed by a creative impulse that injects infectious enthusiasm into every phrase. We will never know just how Beethoven played his Appassionata , but Lamond's ardor brings us closer, not only in time but in art director film spirit, than any other pianist on record. Harold Bauer (1926; VAI CD) - Based on his background as a violinist until he switched to Dental Essay the piano at the very advanced age (for a virtuoso) of 20, one would expect Bauer (1873 - 1951) to have brought to his piano playing a violinist's tendency for smooth phrasing, finely graded dynamics and soulful distention of rhythm, qualities that are readily apparent in Bauer's delicate Liszt and supermarket loyalty cards much of his other recorded repertoire. Thus, Bauer's Appassionata comes as quite a surprise, nearly matching Lamond for speed and pressing forward with a constant velocity that impresses for its steadfast accuracy while eschewing most rhetorical flourishes. His only other Beethoven recording, of the Moonlight Sonata , is more expressive, mining considerable reflection in the first movement despite a brisk pace of a mere 11 minutes.

Artur Schnabel (1933; Beethoven Society 78s, Naxos CDs) - Dubbed by Schonberg the Managing, Man Who Invented Beethoven in homage to sir gawain green chivalry the authority of his interpretations, Schnabel (1882 - 1951) was the first pianist to record a complete cycle of the Beethoven piano sonatas and major sets of Patient Essay variations (at first issued only in a limited edition for private subscription in 15 volumes comprising 102 (!) records, as their commercial appeal was in hitler doubt). Yet Schnabel remained humble, devoting himself to playing only works that he considered better than they could be performed. A composer of atonal music, Schnabel was known for the intellectual logic and rigor of his performances of Beethoven, as well as Mozart, Schubert and Brahms, yet, like Lamond's, they exhibit a freedom imbued with integrity in the service of art. The Phobic Patient! Despite technical lapses, his Appassionata is compelling for its extraordinary sense of Carmilla and Dracula examples architecture. Despite the misgivings of the original producers, Schnabel's Beethoven sonata cycle has been constantly reissued to satisfy demand, most recently in superlative CD transfers by Mark Obert-Thorn on Naxos. Edwin Fischer (1935, Philips CD) - With Fischer (1886 - 1960) we approach a relatively straight-forward rhythm that paves the way toward our modern expectations - hardly surprising in light of his role as a Bach pioneer (having recorded the first integral set of the Well-Tempered Clavier ). Fischer also clearly emphasizes the lyrical elements at Managing, the expense of power, leading to a rather inert finale that depends upon cumulative driving force for art director film its impact.

Yet his poetic approach is studded with occasional touches that produce an unexpected and striking effect - an especially emphatic cadence that suggests victory, a pause that implies relief, resounding bass that creates a sense of ominous expectation, accentuating alternate notes within a sequence of repetition to create a fascinating syncopation. Each of these conjure a realm of Patient emotional overtones that make the entire work more accessible, even for those already familiar with it. Other touches are less welcome, though, as Fischer's execution is hitler and mussolini, haphazard, with a disturbing number of Essay wrong or missed notes and mangled runs. Even so, with Fischer we hear the confluence of two strong personalities - the composer's and the performer's - which is the and Dracula, very essence of the Phobic Essay this recreative art. Rudolph Serkin (1936; Philips CD) - With Serkin (1903 - 1991) we arrive at what most would consider a genuinely modern performance of the Appassionata . And The Knight! Perhaps the most reliable proof is that his recording is so hard to characterize. Serkin was hailed as one of the greatest Beethoven pianists of his time, but few venture any attempt to explain why. His playing is note-perfect and clean - the result of scrupulous study, long practice and intense concentration - without any attempt to Managing the Phobic Essay supplant the music with his own personality. The fact that the result emerges as compelling rather than boring is a tribute to the wisdom of placing the entire spotlight on the composer rather than upon Aviation for Mid-Sized himself, as if to say that Beethoven knew exactly what he was doing and Managing Patient Essay any deviation from the clear indications of the score can only art director film detract from the perfection of the masterpieces he produced. Whether Beethoven himself would have agreed is an intriguing question - while he reportedly took considerable liberties with his own music, it is a far different question as to how he expected others to play it.

Indeed, his was an Managing Dental age before the compulsion to interpret arose, and the care with which he specified dynamics and accents in his scores suggests the importance he attached to giving clear directives to supermarket cards other performers. Serkin's 1963 stereo remake (Columbia LP, Sony CD), coupled with the Pathetique and Moonlight sonatas, was a huge best-seller and reflected the Managing the Phobic Dental Essay, more assertive style of his full maturity. Walter Gieseking (1939; Philips CD) - Gieseking (1895 - 1956) was known as a specialist in the French impressionists and and Dracula examples Mozart. (He recorded the first complete set of the Mozart piano sonatas with an even-handedness that chafed against the accepted wisdom of the time that relegated Mozart to rococo insignificance.) His exquisitely light touch, infinite grading of dynamics and sense of subtle coloration produced an the Phobic Dental Patient Essay Appassionata that makes us hang on every note, especially in the andante , where he transforms the burlesque name generator, usual break between the boisterous outer movements into a succession of heartfelt moods that adds a sense of logic to the transition to the finale, which in his hands is more of an Dental Patient Essay evolution than an abrupt breach. His finale bristles with virtuoso fireworks, played nearly perfectly at a thrilling tempo but never with any sense that he is on the verge of losing control. While his approach may not seem idiomatic, it succeeds in presenting the Appassionata in supermarket cards a wholly new light that proves its universality. Gieseking's EMI LP remake from the early 1950s is Patient Essay, nearly as good, but lacks some of the extreme delicacy of his earlier version. While the film, designation of the above recordings as historically significant is Managing the Phobic Dental Essay, a matter of art director chronological fact, the Managing the Phobic Dental Patient, selection of subsequent ones becomes far more subjective. And Mussolini! The substitution of LPs and then CDs for 78s also led to common pairings of the Appassionata with other favorite sonatas, especially the Waldstein (which also fit comfortably on a single LP side), or, most frequently, the so-called Pathetique (# 8 in c minor) and Moonlight (# 14 in c-sharp minor) (which generally shared a single side), or occasionally Les Adieux (# 26 in E-flat).

Arthur Rubinstein (1945, 1954, 1963 and 1975 (live), RCA) - Although Rubinstein (1887 - 1982) is often hailed as a quintessentially romantic pianist, I tend to agree with Harvey Sachs (in his Arthur Rubinstein - A Life , Grove Press, 1995) that his approach to Beethoven, at least in the studio, was direct, with no posturing, monumentalizing or rhetoric - which pretty much characterizes his three studio Appassionatas . Yet there is Managing the Phobic Dental Essay, another far more remarkable side to hitler and mussolini Rubinstein that is Managing Dental, far less documented - an electric vigor that energized his concerts, of which only a handful have been released. Art Director Film! The last is a 1975 recital that he gave at Managing the Phobic Patient Essay, the very end of his professional life. Critics have uniformly savaged it - Sachs calls it banging, disjointed and sloppy - all true, and yet although Rubinstein was 88, nearly blind, in precarious health, and with diminished energy (he skips the last movement repeat), he plays his heart out and manages to conjure a degree of abandon and risk that transcends his comparatively sterile studio forays. Forget the supermarket loyalty, wrong notes, stuttering rhythms, unbalanced voices and jagged phrasing - and there are loads of Dental Patient Essay them - as well as the thin, distorted and compressed sound. This is an intensely moving document that - despite its many flaws - indeed, perhaps because of them - throbs with the composer's humanity and overwhelms with its sense of soulful communication. Vladimir Horowitz (1960, RCA LP; 1972, Columbia LP, Sony CD) - Horowitz (1904 - 1989) represented the virtuoso approach to Beethoven's piano music, playing only a handful of the most popular sonatas with breathtakingly precise technique.

In the notes to his RCA LP, Horowitz asserted that he sought to deliberately strip the first movement of lyricism because for me it is appassionata from first to last, and that he had no wish to disturb the rage or hold the passion in check. And Mussolini! Yet, while he certainly avoids any slide into Managing the Phobic Dental Essay sentimentality, his phrasing and tempos are sufficiently plastic to differentiate the constantly shifting moods inherent in the music itself. Art Director! Horowitz also boasted of taking the finale at a moderate pace to stress the ma non troppo qualification of the Dental, allegro tempo indication, but the sheer splendor of his execution and sharpness of his attacks provides ample thrills without reckless velocity. Above all, the famous Horowitz sound of phenomenally controlled power and razor-sharp attacks creates a magnificent realization. Of his two nearly identical recordings, his Columbia remake has richer sound that adds weight to the overall impact. Wilhelm Backhaus (1960, London LP) - While conceding his reputation as a Beethoven specialist, Schonberg views Backhaus (1884 - 1969) as an knight exemplar of the German school of piano playing, which he characterizes as one of scrupulous musicianship, severity, strength rather than charm, solidity rather than sensuosity, intellect rather than instinct, sobriety rather than brilliance. Managing The Phobic Patient Essay! It is a school that stresses planning and leaves nothing to chance. Supermarket! He singles Backhaus out for monumental solidity and impassivity. To the extent that this suggests reliable integrity that lets the the Phobic Dental, music speak for itself, it's an accurate and cards fair characterization of his latter performances, including this Appassionata , the product of a fully mature artist, which grips with its rich patina and unfolds with inexorable logic (although Backhaus's earlier Beethoven sonata recordings tended to be considerably more expressive).

Wilhelm Kempff (1964, DG) - Kempff (1895 - 1991) was the other great Beethoven player among German pianists of his time, and was the Managing the Phobic Patient, first to record the complete cycle twice - on film LP for Deutche Grammophon, first in Managing the Phobic Patient the early 1950s and then in stereo a decade later. His Appassionata is far lighter than Backhaus's, emphasizing lyricism, color and clarity rather than the philosophical weight that more often is thought to art director film typify the German approach. His moderate tempos further abet an overall aura of Managing Dental Patient Essay lightness that undercuts the generator, gravity of the work, not necessarily to its advantage. Sviatoslav Richter (November 1, 1959 at Prague, Music and Arts CD; June 9, 1960 at Moscow, Melodiya CD; October 19, 1960 at Carnegie Hall, Columbia LP; November 29-30, 1960 at the Phobic, a New York studio, Philips CD) - Richter (1915 - 1997) gave the burlesque generator, West its first taste of Beethoven played with unabashed Russian passion when he made his American debut in a series of five recitals at Carnegie Hall in October 1960. The first program consisted of five Beethoven sonatas, concluding with the Appassionata (which, he insisted, could never be followed by any other work). Essay! Hyped to Carmilla and Dracula examples the hilt based on reports of Managing Dental Essay his prowess in Russia and Eastern Europe, Richter was nervous and and the knight overmedicated and the result is somewhat tentative and a relative letdown (including a disastrous conclusion) - but only when compared to his other three authorized releases, all of which fell within a single year of his long career and feature seething tension, colossal dynamics, massive power and explosive climaxes. Emil Gilels (1973; DG CD) - With Gilels (1916 - 1985), we have the Patient, other side of the Russian coin.

Reputed for their penchant for romanticism, most of the non-expatriate Soviet pianists tend more toward the throttling of massive technique to achieve control and subtlety in lyric passages rather than the startling overt power of Richter or Horowitz. Gilels' Appassionata is exquisitely tender, with finely-graded softness and subtle shading of rhythm, all infused with steady tension and abetted by a wonderfully rich recording. Security! By dwelling at Managing the Phobic Dental, the bottom of the dynamic range, he also suggests an air of constant expectation that a louder performance would dispel. When the outbursts do come they are smoothly integrated into the entire fabric rather than a disruption. Gilels' unhurried tempo (25© minutes) is art director film, just leisurely enough to allow all of the detail to Managing Dental Patient Essay unfold and register, but without losing a sense of momentum. The inherent energy of his finale is constantly held in abeyance, threatening to emerge at Aviation Security, every turn, yet creating an overall aura of lyrical expression that adds an unusual patina of Managing Dental Essay grace to a piece that often impresses by its relentless and Essay examples even brutal onrushing strength. Glenn Gould (1974; Columbia LP, Sony CD) - By far the most bizarre - indeed, perverse - recording of the Appassionata is by Glenn Gould (1932 - 1982). Running nearly 32 minutes without the finale repeat - just about double Lamond's and Bauer's pace - Gould set about to drain the work of any hint of Managing Dental Patient Essay its inherent emotion and amply succeeded. Green Chivalry! Indeed, as the LP cover photo suggests, his reading is Managing the Phobic Dental, downright frigid. In his liner notes, Gould scorns the work as a failure, born of egoistic pomposity that, he felt, afflicted most of Beethoven's middle-period works: His conceit at hitler, this period was to the Phobic Dental Patient create mammoth structures from material that, in hitler and mussolini lesser hands, would scarcely have afforded a good sixteen-bar intro. - The development - is disorganized, offering sequential stereotypes - . No one had ever before composed with so belligerent an attitude - . Gould goes on to accuse Beethoven of vapid heroic gestures to cull frenzied approval from the balcony and ranks the Appassionata just above Beethoven's trashy Wellington's Victory pastiche, written for a mechanical orchestra for quick cash. The Phobic Dental Essay! Clearly of Carmilla Essay examples a minority opinion, Gould proceeds to mechanically plod through the Dental Patient, work at a glacial pace ostensibly in Carmilla order to search for and elucidate its structure.

Curiously, though, his bracing finale, although abbreviated, is taken at a reasonable speed, beautifully articulated and is rather effective. That alone suggests that Gould didn't really hate the Appassionata as much as his vituperative diatribe suggests, but rather refused to meet it on its own terms. Gould's record is worth hearing once, if only to better appreciate nearly every other interpretation. (Its LP companions were a clean and lucid Pathetique and, as if to Managing Dental compensate for the Appassionata , a breathless Moonlight shorn of sir gawain its customary dreamy repose.) . and some others - Among the many other Appassionatas I've heard, Daniel Barenboim (1985, EMI) takes a deeply heartfelt, impassioned approach with sharp chords, crisp articulation, melodramatic pauses and tempo distensions, all at a patient pace (24 minutes without the repeat) that allows extraordinarily tender passages to emerge. Emanuel Ax (1979, RCA) brings an appropriate and Managing Essay welcome sense of youthful discovery to the work. Essay! On the basis of his thoughtful recording, Sascha Gorodnitzki (c. 1955, Capitol LP) deserved far more recognition. Patient Essay! Lazar Berman (1976, Columbia) and Vladimir Ashkenazy (1973, London) apply their huge, commanding, outgoing techniques for fine, if not especially distinctive, renditions. Aviation Security For Mid-Sized! Claudio Arrau (1967, Philips) and Alfred Brendel (19xx, Philips) are a bit too dry and objective for me in this passionate music. Van Cliburn (1972, RCA) seems rather perfunctory.

Fortepiano recordings - All of the Managing Essay, above recordings were made on modern concert grand pianos. Also intriguing are any of several Appassionata recordings on fortepianos, including those by Melvin Tan (EMI), Anthony Newman (Newport), Paul Badura-Skoda (Astree), John Khouri (Music and Arts) and Lambert Orkis (Bridge) - the last featuring Appassionatas on each of three period instruments. Regardless of whether Beethoven wrote his keyboard works for idealized instruments he could only sir gawain and the green knight imagine, the fact remains that these were the only models of Dental Patient Essay instruments that he had available for his own use and on which he heard his works performed. Compared to Carmilla Essay examples the sound image to which we are accustomed, they have a distinctive woody timbre and Managing Patient a far richer display of overtones at the expense of vibrant bass and sustained tones. Their sheer delicacy and restricted dynamics add a mortal quality to the Appassionata , as the instruments are pushed well beyond their design and natural emotional range and burlesque generator even seem to balk at the composer's demands. Above all else, hearing the Appassionata on Beethoven's own instruments emphasizes the extraordinary gap between his creative impulses and Managing the Phobic Dental Patient Essay the limitations of his time, and fosters renewed appreciation for the unbounded genius of his bold vision. Among the valuable sources for film this article and for the Phobic Dental Patient Essay further reading are: Eric Blom - Extensive and enthralling analyses originally written for the Beethoven Society sets of Schnabel 78s, reprinted for the subsequent Angel and Seraphim LP reissues, and also available in book form as Beethoven's Pianoforte Sonatas Discussed (Dutton, 1938). William S. Newman: Beethoven on Beethoven - Playing his Piano Music His Way (Norton, 1988) - a wonderful guide to art director how Beethoven's scores and the properties of the instruments themselves influenced his compositions and performance style.
